2022 BMW m4

2022 BMW m4

Overview

The 2022 BMW M4 is every bit as thrilling as its M3 sedan sister, but it only comes in coupe or soft-top convertible form. Both made our list of Editors’ Choices. The standard hard-top variant is only available with rear-wheel drive, a smooth manual transmission, and a thrilling 473-hp twin-turbo straight-six engine. The Competition model gains a 503-hp engine, a snappy automatic transmission, and special chassis adjustments, which should result in faster lap times at the local racetrack. All-wheel drive is offered only on the automatic M4, and this slick system includes a drift-worthy rear-drive mode. Regardless of body form or power delivery, the M4 is a blast to drive, and its ride is surprisingly polite when apex hunting isn’t part of the daily commute. We’d prefer traditional gauges over indecipherable digital ones, and fewer selectable driving-mode selections, but the 2022 BMW M4 is a joy to drive, and that’s all that matters.

What Is New in 2022?

The reintroduction of a convertible variant and the addition of all-wheel drive for the first time is the major news for the 2022 BMW M4 portfolio. Only the Competition tune and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system are available for the new drop-top model, which boasts a retractable cloth top instead of a hard top. While this combination is appealing, it raises the price of the 2022 BMW M4 Competition convertible much over that of the coupe.

Performance

How does the M4 drive? The new BMW M4 has a great engine. There’s enough power from idle to redline, and turbo lag is negligible. Competition variants, such as our test vehicle, receive a tiny power boost as well as some minor improvements. In Edmunds’ testing, the M4 Competition accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 122.7 mph. This is comparable to the current Chevrolet Corvette and Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe.

Our test vehicle featured an automatic gearbox. It shifts crisply and fast when you need a downshift during aggressive driving, but it also works well for commuting about town. Even under severe driving, the optional carbon-ceramic brakes (also on our test car) remain fade-free. Our test car came to a complete stop from 60 mph in 106 feet, which is somewhat less than normal for its class.

The basic adaptive suspension does a nice job of keeping the car grounded while pounding around curves, but we found the firmest option to be a little too stiff on the street. The steering is our primary gripe. While it is an upgrade over the previous 2022 BMW M4, it lacks the amount of feedback and accuracy found elsewhere.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort

Although the interior layout and passenger capacity are the same as in the normal 4-series, the 2022 BMW M4 has a selection of distinctive materials and several race-inspired extras. It sports a steering wheel with a thick rim and a pair of red buttons for altering the M driving modes… Carbon-fiber trim pieces and long paddle shifters positioned on the steering wheel may also be added to the interior. The standard M sport seats are well bolstered, with an illuminated logo, an integrated headrest, and, for the first time on an M4, ventilation. The optional carbon-fiber front seats are not only stylish, but they are also lighter than regular seats and can be lowered even further. While the back seat isn’t as spacious as the M3 sedan’s, it’s not a torture chamber, with an additional inch of legroom than its predecessor. When you choose the convertible body design, you have unrestricted headroom by simply lowering the retractable fabric top.

Technology?

What about technology? The M4 comes equipped with the most advanced in-car technology available from BMW. The basic navigation system is one of the best on the market, albeit the continuous traffic updates might be irritating. If you prefer to control things with your phone, the 2022 BMW M4 supports Apple CarPlay (with wireless connection) and Android Auto. The M4 also offers USB-A and USB-C charging and phone connection connections. You may also use voice commands to alter the radio station or enter an address into the navigation system.

The M4 comes standard with a variety of driving aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. Overall, BMW does a good job of fine-tuning these functions such that they are useful without being unduly sensitive.

BMW M4 Price in 2022

The starting MSRP for the base model 2022 BMW M4 Coupe with rear-wheel drive is USD 72,000. The Competition xDrive variant, which costs $79,000, remains the most popular. Using the BMW configurator, you may create your M4. The prices listed above do not include the $995 handling fee, tax, title, license, or registration fees.

BMW M4 Fuel Economy

The 2022 BMW M4 gets up to 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the interstate, while the all-wheel-drive Competition coupe gets 22 mpg on the highway. On our 75-mph fuel-economy route, the latter got an astounding 29 mpg. Visit the EPA’s website for additional information on the M4’s fuel efficiency.

Connectivity and information technology

Every M4 comes with a slick-looking infotainment system with a huge 12.3-inch display. It includes several control choices, including voice commands, buttons on the steering wheel, a huge rotary controller, and buttons on the center console, that allow the user to modify settings and explore menus. The 2022 BMW M4’s system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Harman/Kardon audio system as standard. Those wanting more sophisticated features can choose gesture controls, a Wi-Fi hotspot with a subscription, and a wireless charging pad.

Storage

How is the storage situation? The 2022 BMW M4 has an astonishing amount of storage space. The trunk area is rather large, and the aperture is both broad and tall. The rear seats fold down to increase the available capacity. Inside, with huge door pockets and a wide center console bin, it’s perhaps even more amazing. Even the back seats have little storage containers.

Do you have tiny children that require the installation of a child safety seat? The back seat should have enough space, however, the large doors may make moving a child in and out difficult. The seat anchors are simple to locate and attach to.

BMW M4 variants

The 2022 BMW M4 comes in four body styles: Coupe, Competition, Competition xDrive Coupe, and Competition xDrive Convertible. Every M4 is driven by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque in the Coupe and 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque in the Competition. The Coupe comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, with an eight-speed automatic transmission available as an option. The eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on Competition versions.
