Overview of 2022 Ram 1500:
Pickups have a wide range of abilities, but the 2022 Ram 1500 outperforms other half-ton pickups since it is substantially nicer. Although the entry-level vehicles lack the abundant materials and posh amenities of the higher-end trims, they nonetheless ride better than the more expensive competitors because of the more sophisticated suspension, which can be made cushier with the optional air springs. Ram now provides 1500 with a giant A 12.0-inch touchscreen, cargo bed compartments, and a split-folding tailgate are all standard features. Its engines, which include a 395-hp Hemi V-8 (with or without hybrid assistance) and an eco-friendly diesel six-cylinder with 480 pound-feet of torque, are controlled by a smooth automatic gearbox. The most powerful variant can haul up to 12,750 pounds. The Ram 1500’s capabilities assure that it will not be mistaken for anything other than a truck, but the fact that it can pass for a luxury vehicle is what distinguishes it and gets it an Editors’ Choice award.
What’s New in 2022 Ram 1500?
The 2022 Ram 1500 increases the number of ways customers of the top-tier Limited dubbed as the 10th Anniversary Edition. The G/T is distinguished by a cold-air intake, a one-of-a-kind exhaust system, paddle shifters, and a console-mounted shifter. The BackCountry Edition is essentially an off-road upgrade for the budget-conscious Big Horn and Lone Star vehicles. The 10th Anniversary Edition enhances the Limited model with even more luxurious interior materials, an unusual Blue Shade paint color, and special badging both inside and out.
Although the 702-hp 2022 Ram 1500 TRX (reviewed separately) makes the Rebel less desirable, we still believe it is the half-ton Ram to acquire. We’d go with the crew cab with four-wheel drive, and we prefer the added power and sultry growl of the V-8 over the base V-6. We’d also go for the air suspension because of its adjustable ride height. Because it requires either the Level 1 or Level 2 package, we believe the latter’s remote start, a 115-volt power outlet, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, passive hands-free entry, and other features make it the one to get. We’d also get the 33-gallon fuel tank, which allows for fewer fill-ups during road trips than the basic 26-gallon tank. The only two options we’d recommend are the Safety and Convenience package (adaptive cruise, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist) and the Multifunction Tailgate, which includes a spray-in Bedliner.
Transmission and Engine of 2022 Ram 1500:
There are V-6 and V-8 gasoline powertrains available in a variety of trim levels, all paired with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Both engines are aided by a 48-volt hybrid system, however, the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 can be ordered without it. We’ve driven a few cars equipped with the latter and enjoyed the engine’s baritone exhaust note and quick acceleration. We’ve also driven Rams equipped with the diesel 3.0-liter V-6 (named EcoDiesel), which produces 480 pound-feet of torque, which is more than comparable diesel engines found in the half-ton Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The oil-burning six-cylinder engine is slower than the Hemi, but it’s refined for diesel and gets superior gas mileage. For the most daring, the rugged Rebel variant offers a beefier appearance and genuine off-road prowess. Every 2022 Ram 1500 offers a smooth ride thanks to a rear suspension that uses coil springs as standard or optional air springs, as opposed to the usual leaf-spring configuration found on domestic competitors. Models with air suspension also have changeable ride heights, which improves fuel efficiency and off-road capability. Its light steering and robust brakes allow for pleasant cruising as well as confident stops.
Performance of 2022 Ram 1500:

How does the 2022 Ram 1500 drive? Our test vehicle has a V8 engine and an eight-speed transmission. They function so well together that we could recommend this truck just on that basis. It’s powerful and simple to drive in almost any situation. The same can be said about the recently reintroduced EcoDiesel powertrain, especially if you value the pulling power of diesel torque.
However, the Ram is much more than just strong powertrain options. We’ve tried a variety of 2022 Ram 1500 configurations, and they all impress us with their firm steering, smooth braking, and secure handling. Ram’s decade-long choice to abandon leaf springs in favor of a coil-spring rear suspension is still paying off.
Towing and Payload Capacity of 2022 Ram 1500:
The 2022 Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds and carry up to 2320 pounds. Its maximum towing capability exceeds all but the Ford F-150, which now exceeds 13,000 pounds. Crew cab Rams, including the Rebel, can tow less than the extended Quad Cab variant but still exceed 11,500 pounds.
Fuel Economy of 2022 Ram 1500:
The 2022 Ram 1500 series offers a variety of fuel economy options, including hybridized V-6 and V-8 engines as well as a diesel option. The EPA forecasts that the most efficient V-6 Ram will get up to 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the V-8 version would get up to 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The government forecasts that diesel-powered Rams will obtain up to 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway; these figures are significantly lower with all-wheel drive. The Rebel we tested achieved a 24 mpg highway on our 75-mph real-world fuel-economy route, which is part of our thorough testing process. That’s 6 mpg more than the gas-only V-8 Rebel and 4 mpg more than the nonhybrid V-8 Laramie we drove. Visit the EPA’s website for more information on the fuel efficiency of the 2022 Ram 1500.
Cargo, Interior, and Comfort of 2022 Ram 1500:
The 2022 Ram 1500 boasts a spacious interior with plenty of cubby stowage. Higher models have sophisticated materials and creature comforts that make the Ram feel more like a luxury vehicle than a pickup truck. Most variants may be outfitted with expensive options like heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof, while the most luxurious models have quality leather surfaces and genuine wood accents. The Ram 1500’s crew cab is extremely roomy, as is the case with most full-size pickup trucks. It also offers a lot of internal storage and a distinctive split-folding tailgate. Both the five-foot-seven-inch and six-foot-four-inch cargo beds are available, but the extended Quad Cab only works with the latter.

Connectivity and Infotainment of 2022 Ram 1500:
For a long time, Ram pickups have had one of the greatest infotainment systems and connectivity features in the class. This trend continues with the current trucks, which include a snappy 8.4-inch or large optional 12.0-inch touchscreen on everything bar the base 2022 Ram model. Unfortunately, we encountered numerous issues with the large display during our 40,000-mile long-term test. The systems include several power outlets, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot. Fortunately, even the largest screens include physical knobs and hard buttons to supplement the touch points.

The wildcard of 2022 Ram 1500:
The 2022 Ram 1500 is a sophisticated and refined pickup that drives unlike anything else in its class. Much of this is due to its independent rear suspension, which makes it fun to drive and provides an unusually smooth ride. Choosing the Rebel off-road version gives you additional off-road potential while sacrificing no comfort.
The 2022 Ram 1500, once famed for its big-rig design, is now more sleek and aerodynamic. It doesn’t bombard you with a tough-truck theme. This approach is carried over to the interior, where the Ram impresses with a stylish, logically planned out, and high-quality design. The 12-inch screen and reclining rear seat are always a hit.

Driver’s comments on 2022 Ram 1500
Acceleration of 2022 Ram 1500:
Surprisingly, this Ram weighs the same as the last Ram EcoDiesel we examined. The overall balance has shifted to the rear, but the curb weight is accurate to the pound. Despite this, the vehicle was a half-second faster at 60 mph than the previous Ram. The acceleration run with the default parameters was slow, but the fastest cut a whole second off the time. The 2022 Ram 1500 accelerates decently off the mark because of the low-end torque, but it falls flat on its face as soon as the revs rise. Shifts are smooth but not very rapid, and if left in automatic mode, they will shift just below the redline. The fastest run was done in 4H with stability and traction control turned off, brake torque at 3,000 rpm to create boost, and then go. Shift to 2H while you’re traveling, despite not doing so only slows you down somewhat.
Braking of 2022 Ram 1500:
For a full-size truck, 131 feet isn’t terrible. That matches the performance of the most recent EcoDiesel we tested and outperforms an e-Torque Ram we tested recently by 8 feet. Performance was fairly steady, with only a few feet dropped on the final few runs. The pedal feels adequate but not exceptional. The pedal’s first bite is a little soft, but it hardens up evenly. The pedal travel is long, yet even after strong braking on the acceleration runs, I didn’t observe any fading. The stops were straight with only a slight nosedive. To be honest, these brakes are fantastic. These would be suitable for dragging a trailer downhill. Lots of self-assurance.
Handling of 2022 Ram 1500:
The 2022 Ram 1500 outperformed the other two trucks by 0.76 g. It’s not as fantastic as the Silverado diesel, but it’s still a respectable performance for a full-size truck. Because these beasts were not meant for bends, this is more of a test of car control and feel. There’s a lot of body roll, and you have to brace yourself to stay in your seat. The tires shriek in protest as well, and I noted a lot of sidewall flexing, which is common on larger trucks and SUVs. The steering is sluggish but provides adequate input. The understeer is corrected using both power and steering. In addition, I didn’t detect any bucking, as I had with certain other four-wheel-drive vehicles and SUVs.
